 Children and Christmas

Don't let the Holidays pass without teaching your children about love and compassion

As Christmas rolls around this year, we have another great opportunity to instill in our children the joy of giving. We lead such busy lives that often we don’t find enough time in the year to TEACH our children to be compassionate. Do not let this Christmas go by without taking advantage of this great teaching opportunity.

You can help mold the character of your children to become warm and loving human beings. If you take the time to develop these qualities in your children, you will see the results not only in the service they give to other people, but in the relationship that you have with them in the years to come.

There are many things that you can do this season. Here are some suggestions:

*Visit a homeless shelter, bringing gifts and treats. This is especially effective for family shelters with children.

*Participate in gathering supplies for a food bank.

*Render services at a food bank meal.

*Choose a family in your community that is going through a difficult time, and send or bring wishes and treats.

*Talk with your children about presents that you are giving to other family members. Let them be part of the decision marking.

*Visit a convalescent home in your area. Many elderly people love to see well behaved, polite children. Those that don’t won’t come out of their rooms.

*Have your children look through their clothing and toys, and pick some to donate to the needy.

*Choose one family, and be a "Secret Santa" to them for a week. Leave anonymous presents on their doorstep. Children love this game of trying to leave the present, ring the doorbell, and then get away without being seen.

Don’t let this season go by without making some of these special memories. It will strengthen both your children and your family- and you may touch another person in a way that deeply impacts their lives.
