Little Boat

This is the first of our Novelty Squares.  It is very easy to make.

The picture to the left shows the first three rows.  You can see from the picture that you are working with Squares, Rectangles, and Half Square Triangles.

The bottom row is just one large rectangle that takes up all 4 grids. In the picture there is also a mark at the end of the Triangle Points that need the 1/4 -inch space to the edge of the fabric.

Each of the units in the grid was made to finish at 2-inches.  Start by making your Half Square Triangles.  You will need six of them.  Use Squares cut at 2 7/8 inches, using your dark and light prints.

Since the units will finish at 2-inches, the squares will be cut at 2 7/8 inches.

In the 3rd row, you have a Rectangle as part of the hull of the boat.  It will be cut 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches.  (4-inches is the size of the two grids it covers, and 1/2 -inch is for the seam allowance on the two sides).

Finally, the bottom piece covers four grids, so it will be eight inches, plus 1/2 inch for the outer seam allowances.

Sew all the units together, starting with the smaller ones. Be sure the rows are pressed in opposite directions.

Press the horizontal seams in the direction they want to go.  I pressed the top row up, and the rest down.

Have fun with this block.  It can be made in solid colors, or in any small print.  The above print is a floral with a lot of wavy lines.  Be creative- it is your art piece.
