Budget Decorating with Carpet Remnants

By Alyssa Davis

Carpeting can be one of the more expensive choices for flooring, especially for high-end brand names and textures. However, you can still get high quality carpeting for any room, even on a budget, by using carpet remnants for your flooring needs. Budget decorating with carpet remnants does not have to mean laying carpet on the floor, but can imply a variety of unique uses and applications, as well.

Obviously, the most popular use of carpet remnants is flooring. Whether you use complementing shades and textures to create a whole floor or a unique rug, carpet remnants are much cheaper than traditional carpeting, and can add a very distinctive touch to any room. Carpet remnants are the leftover pieces of carpet cut from a roll of carpet, so they cost significantly less than a whole roll of carpet. Some pieces are much larger than others, so it is possible to get a whole room of carpet from remnants, without paying the high price of a roll.

Besides flooring, there are other ways to go easy on your budget and still have unique decorative accents and accessories. Here are some other ideas of what you can do with carpet remnants or scraps, with a little help from other materials, such as glue, craft sticks, carpet tacks or tackless strips, and similar objects. Create ideas of your own based on these, or research these to make unique gift ideas and accessories for your own home.

Use carpet remnants to create custom picture frames. Make sure to protect the picture with a mat or similar choice so that the picture is not damaged when you add your customized frame. For a less floppy frame, add craft sticks or wood to the back of the carpet for stability. You can then further customize the frame with decorative accents, such as scrapbooking materials, stickers, buttons, glitter, or similar items that are very inexpensive and easy to manipulate.

Carpet with interesting texture can be used to create a very interesting wall art piece, as well. Frame the piece with wood or similar medium that complements the shade of carpet. You will not need to add a mat, unless you choose to do so, and you should avoid using glass or plastic overlay, as it will affect the texture of the carpet remnant. This type of artwork does not have to be square or rectangular, and it is very fun to create odd shapes and styles that add an unconventional focal point to any room.

Use carpet remnants to cover chair or bench seats, or as a headboard idea, to save money in an attention-grabbing way. Rather than reupholstering dining chairs or bench seats, add carpet remnants to the seat as a cover, and attach with staples or tacks that will hold the carpet in place securely. Make sure you talk to a professional first, to be sure that the remnant is suitable for this type of use, as some carpet remnant styles are more comfortable or pliable than others.

Utilizing carpet remnants can be a fun way to save money in a variety of places. It is simple to work with, and usually easy to fashion into unique decorative accents or perfect flooring ideas. Much cheaper than most types of wood flooring, carpet remnants can still be a beautiful and comfortable addition to your living room, bedroom, a family room or dining room, or even the bathroom. Budget decorating with carpet remnants is a great way to save money, and the money you save can be spent on other things, such as furniture, or a great vacation with someone you care about.
